P.E. Curriculum

At Copley Junior School, we believe that all children can find enjoyment and satisfaction from taking part in physical activity and P.E. is promoted as an important part of our curriculum.

We offer a wide range of sports within the curriculum and extra-curricular sports clubs are available each day after school. We are a successful sporting school and our cross country, football, gymnastics, swimming, cricket and athletics teams have competed successfully in local, regional and national competitions and tournaments.

Our aims in teaching P.E. are:

  • to acquire new, and develop existing, skills and be able to select and apply these in a variety of situations.
  • to develop a knowledge and understanding of fitness and health by fostering a positive attitude towards physical activities.
  • to develop a feeling of enjoyment and achievement through providing opportunities to express ideas and feelings in a form of non verbal communication.
  • to develop positive attitudes to physical endeavour including perseverance, fair play and sporting behaviour and the ability to cope with success and failure.

Cricket Coaching from Complete Coaching Solutions

Pupils in Year 3-6 enjoyed developing their cricket skills during their PE sessions alongside our visiting coaches. The sessions began with tips and skill development before pupils put their skills and team work to the test with an energetic game.  

Visit from Doncaster Rugby League Club Players

As part of their Legacy Programme, Year 6 were delighted to take part in rugby workshops led by some of the players from Doncaster Rugby League Club. A fantastic day was enjoyed by all!

Visit by Beth Dobbin

We were delighted to welcome Beth Dobbin into school. Beth is a former pupil at Copley, who has overcome many obstacles on her way to achieving international athletics success. Beth is the Scottish record holder for the 200m with a time of 22.5 seconds and she has competed successfully at the European and World Championships.

Beth led an inspirational assembly, showing us a clip of her record breaking run and talking to the children about the determination and ability to get over setbacks that are needed to achieve success. Afterwards, she led a session with Year 5, demonstrating how to make a perfect sprint start, before a few races (which Beth won!)

The children were very keen to see a race between Beth and our very own Mr Henry, which was very close (we think Beth was being kind!!)

We wish Beth every success, as she is in training for major elite events in the future.


We offer Bikeability training to all pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 each year. In 2019-2020 fifty four Year 5/6 pupils took part! This training is designed to give children the skills and experience to cycle safely and confidently. It is Cycling Proficiency for the 21st century and involves cycling in both an off-road playground environment and on roads around the vicinity of the school. Children enjoy cycling and of course it brings many health benefits, develops confidence and gives them independence. Children who have been trained are much safer and, in addition, tend to cycle more.

Children take the Level One course on the school playground. To progress onto the Level Two training course the following day, there will be an expectation that children can ride a bike already, are able to balance on their bike, look behind them without wobbling and hold a signal for at least 3 seconds. They also go out on quiet local roads close to school during the Level Two training course. Children receive a certificate and badge for achieving the Level One course and the Level Two course.

Our New Gym Equipment

We have used our Sports Premium funding from the government to buy a new climbing frame, mats, a springboard and other equipment for our P.E. lessons. The children have really enjoyed using the new apparatus.

Creative Dance

In their dance lessons, Year 6 learned about the 'haka', a ceremonial dance or challenge in Maori culture. The 'haka' is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment. Year 6 created and performed their own 'haka' with great enthusiasm. Fierce!

Gymnastics Success

Our Gym Club is led by Miss Hull. Every year our gymnastics team is selected following trials and we compete in the gymnastics championships. In 2017 we competed at county level and our team came 3rd for the whole of Yorkshire! In 2018 our team came 2nd for the whole of Yorkshire. In 2019 we are very proud to share that the team came first and they are now County Champions for the whole of Yorkshire! Well done to the gymnastics team, who then competed in the National Gymnastics Championships Finals and were judged to be the 10th best team in the country! In 2020 we were again very proud of our gymnastics team as they came 2nd for the whole of Yorkshire in the Yorkshire Gymnastics Finals.

Morning Yoga

Strrretch...and relax! Thirty four children in Year 6 have been very dedicated in attending early morning yoga sessions from 8am. A perfect way to start the day.

Lunchtime Games

Mr Henry leads lunchtime play every day from 12.30. Lots of active play and fun!

Group Dance Sequences

As part of their P.E. lessons, Year 3 loved creating a group dance sequence inspired by the 'James Bond' theme tune. Great work, Year 3!

'Coppers for Copley' Sporty Day

Thank you to children and parents/carers for supporting the penny jar collection.After all their saving of coppers, the children in each class had the fun of choosing what to spend their money on. This was matched by the CSA so the children had twice as much to spend.

The children loved choosing what to spend their ‘savings’ on, with the CSA generously doubling the savings of each class. Children had all saved enough to put in an agreed amount of their money to fund an outdoor activity day, which included a 300m bouncy obstacle course, assault course, shelter building, team building exercise, laser shoot out and camouflage exercises and, at the request of children, nail painting and face painting!

Coppers for Copley helps children understand that saving just a little money regularly can help you save up quite a good amount of money to spend as you wish.

Visit by Professional Football Referee

We were delighted to welcome a top class professional football referee into school to work with our Year 5 pupils. In an engaging and challenging session, children were engaged and enthused and key personal values were promoted.

Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Our military fitness club, Scotty's Heroes, encourages children to take part in military missions that are lots of fun too!

Scotty's Heroes Holiday Club

Themed days for our popular Scotty's Heroes Holiday Club include: Military Activities; Survival Day; Orienteering Missions and Outdoor Hunting. The gallery below shows photos from the final day - partner activities; hot chocolate making; learning how to make and control fires safely and a very messy holi colour powder battle!

Swimming and Water Safety at Copley

Please find below our most recent annual report on the success of swimming lessons in Year 5. Owing to the school closures because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Year 5 pupils did not complete their swimming programme in 2019-2020. Swimming lessons for both Year 5 and Year 6 are scheduled for the summer term 2021 so that all cohorts will have had opportunity to  participate in swimming lessons.

Swim Safe

Many thanks to the RNLI and Swim England for providing our Year 5 Swim Safe session. Young people love swimming outdoors – but swimming in the sea, rivers and lakes is very different to swimming in a pool. Swim Safe gives children aged 7–14 an opportunity to learn how to be safe in and around open water. Our strongest 24 swimmers were selected by our weekly swimming instructor for a fun outdoor swimming session with fully qualified lifeguards and swimming instructors.

School Games Award - Bronze Level

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme that aims to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. In July 2017 we achieved the Bronze School Games Award and we were reaccredited with the award in July 2019. We are close to achieving Silver so, with a few development steps in mind, this is our aim for the next academic year.

Healthy Learning Healthy Lives Award

Doncaster Local Authority has awarded Copley Junior the Healthy Learning Healthy Lives accreditation. The Healthy Learning Healthy Lives Award judges school provision against the criteria set for PSHCE, P.E., emotional wellbeing and promoting healthy eating. Our assessor commented, "Your submission was of a fantastic standard showing the commitment you are making to support health and wellbeing as a setting."
