Mini Life Coaches

At Copley Junior School, the emotional health and well-being of each and every one of our children is a top priority.  Our PSHE subject leader, Miss Wright, has developed and tailored our PSHE curriculum, which complements our rich and vibrant personalised delivery of the curriculum.
Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through class lessons, whole school and year group assemblies, project lessons and visiting outside agencies.
We realise the importance of the emotional health and well being of our children as well as their daily quest for knowledge and understanding across all of their academic subjects. With this in mind, we introduced our Copley 'Mini Life Coaches' who are trained every summer term. The six week course covers:
  • Embedding our learner values into our daily lives - in and out of school.
  • Listening skills and being present.
  • How to cope with worries, frustrations, sadness, anxiety and techniques to support relaxation.
  • Encouraging and coaching others.
  • Providing a calm and safe environment for our children.
  • Building confidence, team work and self-esteem in others.
  • How to run a 'coaching service' and plan, prepare and deliver public presentations.
It is our aim to empower our pupils with resilience, confidence and self-esteem. We are proud of each and every one of our pupils and as they move through school and beyond, we take great pleasure in developing them as individuals who are not only equipped with the tools and skills to develop themselves, but also become individuals who take pride in bringing out the best in others.

What is a Mini Life Coach?

As part of their training, Mini Life Coaches were asked 'What is a Mini Life Coach?'

Here are some of their responses:

“A mini life coach is a guide and helper who helps you develop a growth mindset. We run sessions that people go to have fun or if they have a worry they can go and tell a mini life coach. If somebody wants us to keep what they say private we will, but if it is a safeguarding reason we will have to tell an adult. A mini life coach also helps you with your strengths and weaknesses but in your mind not your body. Mini life coaches help you develop a growth mindset, not a fixed one. They are always helping people out. Mini life coaches aim to empower their peers.”

Another pupil wrote, “A mini life coach encourages and pushes people out of their comfort zone so they can strive to be the best they can be.”

One of our Mini Life Coaches wrote, "I think a mini life coach is somebody who guides people towards the right path and helps them to make the right choices."

2020-2021 Wonderful Wellbeing Days

During the autumn term 2020, as we were keeping within our year group protected bubbles within our COVID-19 measures, our Year 6 Mini Life Coaches were not able to run their usual lunchtime wellbeing sessions, so they met with Miss Wright, our Emotional Health and Wellbeing leader, to discuss what they could lead to support pupils across school at the current time.

The Mini Life Coaches decided they would hold 'Wonderful Wellbeing Days' when all pupils across school would have a health and wellbeing focus. At the end of the first half term, children took part in a year group cross country competition, they had a yoga and relaxation session, took part in mindfulness colouring and designed wellbeing shields to consider what 'powers' they already have to support their wellbeing.

At the end of the second half term, the Year 6 Mini Life Coaches designed another timetable for a day of wellbeing activities and they shared their plans via the weekly newsletter:

"Before the end of term, all of the children in school will be taking part in the second ‘Wonderful Wellbeing’ day of the year. We have organised a day of relaxing, fun and creative mindfulness activities with the help of Miss Wright. Now, more than ever, it is very important that we all take time to look after our emotional health and wellbeing and we are proud to support other children at Copley to do this. The day will involve a House mat ball competition with Mr Henry, mindfulness colouring, Christmas star guided meditation, an outdoor elf hunt, wellbeing photo booth and more. We hope you will all enjoy it very much. "

Mini Life Coaches launch their 2019-2020 Workshops

Well done to our  2019-2020 Mini Life Coaches, who have been very busy preparing their workshops in order to support the emotional wellbeing of pupils across school. Each group has worked independently to prepare their workshop programme and a PowerPoint presentation to introduce this. It was lovely to see the children's confidence as they launched their Mini Life Coach workshops in assembly and the children's enthusiasm in response. So many children have signed up to participate - the Mini Life Coaches are going to have a busy year!

 Mini Life Coach Workshops for Children

Since September our Year 6 'Mini Life Coaches' have been very successfully running their own coaching programmes. We are very proud of how professionally our 'Mini Life Coaches' lead this initiative in school. During 2018-2019, 130 children (65% of the school community) chose to attend at least one set of five lunchtime sessions to support their emotional health and well being.

OFSTED thought that our provision for personal development was 'outstanding' and we believe that with the children supporting each other in a peer to peer situation, with clear adult guidance, we are equipping our children with the personal development tools that will last a lifetime! Outdoor Team Games

Outdoor Team Work Fun helps you to boost your team work skills and helps you to make new friends or strengthen existing friendships. We include lots of different types of games (mostly team games) which include capture the flag, dodge ball, escape and many more.

Mindfulness Colouring

Mindfulness Colouring asks us to focus on how we choose and apply colour in a design to bring our awareness to the present moment - it allows you to peacefully reconnect with your emotions. Do you want to come along and create calming pieces of art? Join our sessions to take part and have a relaxing time with friends.

Relaxation and Yoga

Join us for our dedicated relaxation and yoga sessions on a Monday lunch time. The soothing music, calming mantras and peaceful yoga poses will relax your mind, body and soul. Our sessions will use a mixture of techniques to ensure that everyone leaves with a feeling of tranquillity and a higher level of emotional wellbeing.

Creative Crafts

Creative Crafts is a really good Mini Life Coach session to come to because it encourages a higher level of creativity and perseverance. We also make sure that every person has the opportunity to make more friends and we will listen to everyone’s ideas.

Mini Life Coach Reflections

Miss Wright gave the Mini Life Coaches time to reflect on their leadership styles and what they had achieved as Mini Life Coaches. Miss Wright also gave the Mini Life Coaches opportunity to nominate one member of the Mini Life Coach team whom they thought had made a special contribution to the work of the group.

Below are some of the children's reflections about each other:

Zoe - "Zoe is a lovely girl, always kind and thoughtful and always puts others before herself. She is patient and helpful when leading her yoga and relaxation workshops."

Josh - "He always puts a smile on a child's face when they attend his workshops."

Bridey - "She is very good at planning ideas, she works well with other people and always tries to make sure everybody enjoys each Mini Life Coach session."

Scarlett - "She always has sympathy for other people's feelings and helps people who come to the sessions to make new friends outside of their year group."

Neve - "Neve is a lovely girl and is always an excellent role model to other people. She makes sure everyone in the Mini Life Coach group has an equal turn."

Charlotte N - "She is patient and understanding and helps everyone in the group to do their best."

Matilda - "Matilda is very organised and very creative, so she is perfect to help lead our creative crafts sessions. She loves to help other people out with their art work."

Charlie - "She is helpful and supportive, she leads by example and is a good role model."

Emily F - "She loves drawing, she is very creative and is superb in her role as a Mini Life Coach in leading mindfulness colouring workshops."

Omar - "He is a great Mini Life Coach because he is kind and makes the people who go to his outdoor teamwork groups laugh."

Eve - "She has been a supportive and open minded Mini Life Coach and she enjoys helping other children to be creative."

Mindfulness Colouring

Adventure of Trust

Whether you are a proud decision maker or a quieter person looking for a chance to develop your teamwork skills, ‘Adventure of Trust’ is sure to be the session for you. We will use fun team activities and games which are designed to develop trust with the other children in the group.

Relaxation and Yoga

Helping Hands

Do you want to gain the skills needed to build strong relationships with your friends? ‘Helping Hands’ is the Mini Life Coaches session for you. We will work together as a team to learn how to build positive friendships and how to cope with a range of emotions, including dealing with conflict resolution. Our session will use lots of fun games to help us to bond as a group over our time together.

Mini Life Coach Sessions - Analysis of Impact

During 2017-2018, 109 children chose to attend at least one set of five lunchtime sessions to support their emotional health and well being.

After completing their workshop sessions, children were surveyed about their views:

100% of children enjoyed their sessions

81% of children learned new skills

78% of children widened their network of friends

97% of children worked with children who are not in their usual friendship group within sessions

93% of children would recommend Mini Life Coaches to a friend

Sharing Outstanding Practice with other Schools

We have been pleased to welcome teachers from across Doncaster to a training session to showcase the work of our Mini Life Coaches. The school’s work to support children’s emotional health and well-being and the peer-to-peer support offered by our ‘Mini Life Coaches’ was recognised by Ofsted as innovative practice and so we were asked to share how we have developed this at Copley Junior. As part of the training, some of the ‘Mini Life Coaches’ joined the group to demonstrate some of their work. As usual, our visitors were very impressed by our articulate, enthusiastic and skilled children!

Awards and Recognition for the Mini Life Coaches

Civic Mayor Award for the Mini Life Coaches

We are very proud to share that our Year 6 Mini Life Coaches have been awarded the Civic Mayor’s ‘Make a Difference School Award’, out of 93 nominations from schools across Doncaster.

 Our Year 6 Mini Life Coaches provide peer mentoring across school and have been very successful in leading lunchtime workshops on a variety of themes: meditation and relaxation; mindfulness colouring; outdoor teamwork fun and creative crafts. The feedback from the children who have attended (65% of our school community, 130 children) shows what great impact the workshops have had.

I am very grateful to Miss Wright, our fantastic PSHE subject leader, who leads our Mini Life Coach work with so much enthusiasm and dedication. She was very proud to attend the celebration event at the Mansion House and to see our award being presented to one of our Mini Life Coaches by the Civic Mayor, Councillor Majid Khan. The event shared many inspirational examples of young people making a positive impact in their communities.
